When you’re feeling sad and frustrated, seeking emotional and physical support from others around you is natural. Hugs and other forms of physical affection can trigger your body to release oxytocin, strengthening your bond with your loved ones. As you may already be aware.

But what happens when your mood plummets and you can’t easily reach that comfort?

Perhaps you’re feeling gloomy, overwhelmed, or just plain nasty at work or around strangers. A sympathetic embrace appears to be just what you need to lift your spirits, but no one is available to do the honours – no one other than you, that is.

Giving yourself a hug may seem foolish, but it could genuinely help. Touch/hug (yes, even your own) can relieve stress and make you feel safe and at ease. It can also promote self-kindness and self-compassion, leading to more positive emotions.

Hugging oneself is as simple as wrapping your arms around yourself and holding on briefly, much like hugging someone else.🌿
