Dr Victor Chang and his colleagues at St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney performed life-changing cardiac surgery on Fiona Coote 40 years ago today.
.
Fiona’s heart was damaged by the consequences of viral tonsillitis.
.
After her parents made a public plea to locate a suitable donor, she became Australia’s second heart transplant recipient at the age of 14.
.
“To be feeling so well and healthy is phenomenal, this is an incredible day for me.”
.
On this special anniversary, the @victorchanginst honours Fiona, the longest-surviving heart transplant recipient in the southern hemisphere. Dr. Chang’s groundbreaking work continues at St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney in collaboration with the institute.
