π§ What Is a Personal Directive (PD)?
A Personal Directive allows you to outline your wishes for personal care if you lose mental capacity. These wishes can be:
β
General β like where you want to live
β
Specific β such as pain management, life support, or religious-based medical preferences
β
Organ donation β best included in your PD, as itβs more likely to be accessed quickly than your Will
π Donβt forget to register with the Organ Donation Registry of Alberta and keep your preferences up to date!
π When does a PD take effect?
Only when you lose mental capacity β and it ends if you regain capacity, pass away, or if a Guardianship Order is granted.
β οΈ A PD does not give authority while you still have capacity. If you need help making decisions while capable, options like a Supportive or Co-Decision Maker may be more appropriate (these require separate applications).
π‘ Like a POA, if no PD exists and capacity is lost, a Guardianship Order can be applied for. If granted, it will cancel any existing PD.
