🧠 What Is a Personal Directive (PD)?

A Personal Directive allows you to outline your wishes for personal care if you lose mental capacity. These wishes can be:

βœ… General β€” like where you want to live
βœ… Specific β€” such as pain management, life support, or religious-based medical preferences
βœ… Organ donation β€” best included in your PD, as it’s more likely to be accessed quickly than your Will

πŸ“Œ Don’t forget to register with the Organ Donation Registry of Alberta and keep your preferences up to date!

πŸ•’ When does a PD take effect?
Only when you lose mental capacity β€” and it ends if you regain capacity, pass away, or if a Guardianship Order is granted.

⚠️ A PD does not give authority while you still have capacity. If you need help making decisions while capable, options like a Supportive or Co-Decision Maker may be more appropriate (these require separate applications).

πŸ’‘ Like a POA, if no PD exists and capacity is lost, a Guardianship Order can be applied for. If granted, it will cancel any existing PD.
