🇨🇦 Toronto Surgeons Revive a Stopped Heart — A Canadian First in Life-Saving Transplant Innovation 🫀

A Toronto hospital says it transplanted a heart that had stopped beating — a groundbreaking procedure that could increase the number of available donor hearts by 30% across the country.

Usually, heart transplants happen when a donor is brain-dead but their heart is still beating. But in this new method — called Donation after Circulatory Death (DCD) — the heart stops beating, is removed, and then revived before being transplanted into the recipient.

👨‍⚕️ Dr. Seyed Alireza Rabi, who led the surgery, says it still feels like a miracle every time a heart begins to beat again inside a new person.

💡 This innovation could save more lives and shorten long wait times. Over 175 Canadians are currently waiting for a heart transplant, and sadly, some die before a match is found.

Doctors in Toronto plan to perform 10–15 more DCD heart transplants in the next year, hoping this new method will bring fresh hope to patients with end-stage heart failure.
