Today marks 25 years since Maria Freno Martz Thomson and I were wheeled into separate operating rooms each with their own transplant team at Cedar Sinai in Beverly Hills. We would end up being the fourth live liver transplant ever done at Cedar Sinai. Up until yesterday I didn’t remember the details of how I threw my hat in the ring to give Maria the 60% of the liver she needed to live which was my complete right lobe. Kelley Martz Santucci called me yesterday and we took a walk down memory lane. She had memories that I didn’t quite recall. All I remember is that my second mom that had always been so supportive since I was 12 yrs old and allowed me to live in their home when I was a young adult, was sick and needed help in the shape of a liver donation and to get a cadaveric liver meant she had to sit on the list and possibly never get that life saving organ in time. Receiving a living donor liver meant that she was going to be just a little less sick so it just made perfect sense.
The surgery couldn’t happen without Maria having a full-time caretaker and Kelley was truly the ONLY one that fit that bill… my sister stepped up to be my caretaker so we had those bases covered. The rest is history…
For those of you reading this INCREDIBLY long post, I encourage you to make sure you have that dot on your drivers license… even in the event you can’t help somebody while you’re living. Please make sure you help somebody with organ donation once you’re gone because you won’t need them where you’re going!! #quartercentury #25YearsStrong #LIVERversary #OrganDonation #livelivertransplant
