Today is Julie’s beautiful daughter Zoe’s 20th birthday.
Zoe sadly passed away 17 years ago at the tender age of 2.5 years old.
Zoe had received a heart transplant thanks to a courageous family agreeing to their loved one’s organs being donated a year before.
On this Zoe’s 20th birthday, Julie who is a much loved and an integral part of #ShareYourWishes, shares Zoe’s story and asks you to talk about your organ donation decision, and even though Zoe sadly passed away Julie wants people to know how positive organ donation is.
“It’s been 17 long years without my little girl beside me, and today Zoe would have been 20 yrs old. I don’t really know how I’ve got through 17 years without one of my children, as it’s not something any parent wants to think about but sadly for a lot of us it’s reality.
Zoe was born with aortic stenosis, a heart valve problem. She battled so much, had endless health problems but at 18 months old was given another chance by a stranger, a family that in their hour of heartbreak and despair gave my daughter hope and a chance of a new life.
Zoe lived another year with her new heart and yes she should have got longer but sadly she didn’t, but that year was amazing.
I cannot tell you how much love, respect and thankfulness we have in our hearts for that donor and their family. Donors are heroes, no other word for it, and in my heart I think that’s how I’ve carried on, as the donor family saved me too.
I saw Zoe well for the first time in her little life, and in her short time she helped gain 1.2 million more names on that all important organ donation register.
I’ve done lot of things in memory of my little girl, a lot of good things. Zoe made me a better person, and taught me a lot in her short lifetime. It was an honour to be Zoe’s mum.
