Title: The Ant Who Needed a Transplant
Author: Dr Bill Wall
Illustrator: Dave Hill
Type: fiction
Topics: organ transplant
Images: drawings
Amount of text: paragraphs
🫀One day, Papa Ant begins struggling to get the toboggan up the wintery hill, a task that had previously been no trouble for him. A doctor quickly tells him he needs a heart transplant and he’s sent home to wait for a new heart. Papa Ant continues to get worse until the Ant family gets the call they’ve been waiting for. The tragedy of another family means Papa Ant can get a new heart. The Ant family makes sure to express their gratitude for the donor’s family’s decision and Papa Ant makes a full recovery.🫀
This book is heavy but it has a happy ending for the main characters’ family. I appreciated how it acknowledged the donor’s family so that readers can understand both sides of the action. Organ donation saves lives but the unfortunate reality is that the donation comes from someone else’s tragedy. While grieving, it might not be the top priority of the donor’s family to be thinking of others but this book shows the impact organ donation has on the recipient’s family and how that can help the donor’s family cope.
Thank you to Orgamites at FanExpo Canada for my copy of this book. I highly recommend everyone, but especially educators and health professionals, check out Orgamites – anthropomorphic organs teaching kids about organ donation and general health with free resources. Personally, I am a regular blood donor and on the stem cell registry with Canadian Blood Services, and will be registering as an organ donor in the near future. Additionally, as someone who used an Anatomy Lab during her undergrad, I also want to express my gratitude to those who have donated their bodies to science.
