This Veterans Day, we honor those who serve — and those who keep on giving.

When Alisha Beesinger of Lakebay, Washington, learned about a veteran in need of a kidney, her heart led her to act. Though she wasn’t a match for that veteran, she stayed with Donor Outreach for Veterans (DOVE) — and a year later, she donated her kidney to James Ellis, a U.S. Navy veteran living across the country.

For Alisha, this wasn’t just about giving — it was about serving.
Her husband, brother, and son have all served in the Armed Forces, and she saw her donation as a way to honor their courage and sacrifice.

“What better way to give back than to do something like this?” she said.

Through DOVE and the VCU Health Hume-Lee Transplant Center, Alisha’s gift gave James his life back — and brought two families together across 2,000 miles. Today, they call each other family.

💚 This Veterans Day, we celebrate all who serve — on the battlefield, in hospitals, and in their communities — and honor the veterans whose legacies of courage inspire lifesaving gifts through organ, eye, and tissue donation.
