This Black History Month, Gift of Life Michigan proudly celebrates Dr. Clive O. Callender — a legendary transplant surgeon whose work reshaped organ donation and transplantation for Black communities and beyond.

At 88, Dr. Callender’s impact continues to inspire. As one of the first Black transplant surgeons in the world, Dr. Callender performed over 600 lifesaving transplants, trained hundreds of physicians and has been dedicated to breaking down barriers in medicine.

Dr. Callender founded the National Minority Organ Tissue Transplant Education Program (MOTTEP), a movement that empowers Black communities with education, awareness and access to organ donation. His work led to the founding of Detroit MOTTEP, which just celebrated its 30th anniversary.
