Thirteen years ago Tracy was gifted a second chance at life, by a very selfless young woman who agreed to organ donation before her untimely passing.
As the anniversary for my kidney transplant rolls around this year, I am so grateful for the past 13 years it has given me, all thanks to my donor and her selfless family.
I was 25 when diagnosed with kidney failure due to having high blood pressure (the only sign) which was picked up during routine check because I was on the pill.
Told I had about 18-24 months until I required dialysis. Chose peritoneal dialysis due to my lifestyle and work commitments and was on it for nearly 3 years when the phone-call came.
These years have been the best of my life yet, by making the most of every opportunity which has allowed me to take adventurous holidays abroad, earning a degree and changing career, setting up a company and selling it, and meeting my best friend whom I married.
But the biggest blessing of all was becoming a mother. This would never have been possible without receiving a new kidney as my body just wasn’t fit enough on dialysis to support a growing baby.
My first holiday abroad following transplant was a gift from the in-laws to go on a cruise. My husband Chris and I have also gone skiing 3 times across Europe. We have taken a road trip across the west coast of America before trying for a baby.
After 2 miscarriages which I was told was normal, and nothing related to my transplant, I eventually became pregnant with Theodore who turned 7 last September.
Having my son and watching him grow has been the best gift anyone could have given me, and which is why I make sure we live an adventurous life making memories.
I will forever be grateful and in her debt, which I vow to continue living my life to the fullest.”
