Teddy is just like any other three-year-old at this time of year – excited for Christmas. But the best gift he could receive would be a new liver.
Teddy was born with Neonatal Haemachromatosis, which caused an iron overload in his liver. He was put on the urgent list and had a transplant from a deceased donor, his superhero, at just 10 weeks old. However, the transplant failed and he needed a second transplant, a living donation from his mum, Emma, in 2023, when he was aged 21 months. Sadly, this has also started to fail because the veins have become blocked – and he went back on the transplant list last December.
His mum describes what the wait is like:
“He’s okay at the moment but there already signs his liver is deteriorating. The doctors said the best way forwards is a whole new donated liver.
“Everyone says he looks amazing. And the doctors say that he can wait for the right liver to arrive. They don’t want to risk it, they want to give him one that’s the best for him and hopefully one that will last.
“He is a character of the highest level, super cheeky and brings happiness to everyone he meets. I think it’s his determination and stubbornness gets him through everything he has to deal with. He makes sure he does everything like his big brother, Theo, and will always put a smile on your face with his little dances! Teddy keeps fighting so we keep fighting with him. He’s our little trooper.”
“He is super excited for Christmas, seeing all the lights. He has even written (well, he’s drawn) his list to Santa by himself. I think this year will be special as it’s his first year where he’s
understanding more, we all cannot wait, his big brother included. Nothing beats the magic of Christmas! (Well maybe receiving his call.) ”
“Unfortunately, we see the transplant waiting list numbers are going up and up and up, unfortunately some patients may not have the chance. We just keep on living, and making all the memories we can with our boys and enjoy Christmas together. It’s all we can do.”
Confirm your decision on the NHS Organ Donor Register this Christmas. It takes 2 minutes and you could save up to 9 lives.
