Several years ago, in 2018, Julia Harlin, 71, from Frederick, MD, suffered liver failure. Her only option was to get a liver transplant.
+
She has five children, but she never wanted them to become her donors. However, her daughter Eileen, along with two of her siblings, applied to become donors. Only Eileen turned out to be a match.
+
The transplant surgery was carried out successfully in August 2022, at the University of Maryland Medical Centre in Baltimore.
+
Not long after, the family was shocked to find out that Julia’s kidneys began to fail.
+
Eileen underwent testing again, and the doctors found she was a match. The surgery was performed at the same hospital in December 2023.

“The mom’s kidney function recovered immediately. And both of them were home after two or three days post transplant,” Daniel G. Maluf, M.D., the director of the transplant program, commented.
