Happy 2nd Heartiversary to me!!!

In my mind it’s more of a birthday to me now than my actual birthday. For me it’s a time of celebration, but also a time for introspection. It’s also a time to remember my donor, and to remember that this time of joy for my family is also a time of sadness for another family. There’s a lot to think about….

I’m happy to say that, like my birthday, I didn’t really think of it as soon as I woke up. I woke up, the coffee started to hit, and then I thought about it. Why is that good? Because last year my mind relived each day’s events from the previous year every day in October. I feel like I’ve done some real and major healing from the trauma.

This time last year my neutropenia was ramping up towards severe sepsis. This year, I feel “normal.” Better than normal, actually, compared to any time in my adult life. I can attend sold out football games, go to restaurants and movie theaters, and live my life like a normal person. I can walk from the parking garage into the stadium without stopping to rest and catch my breath two or three times.

This was all made possible through the gift of organ donation, the skill and dedication of a whole host of doctors and medical support staff, and the love and support of my family. Most of all, it was made possible by a miraculous gift from Taylor, my donor. On this day I want to express my gratitude and thanks to all!
