“My story is a bit of a long one, so I’ll try to keep it as short as possible unless you want to grab a cuppa!!

I’m half a century old now & it’s all thanks to my beautiful donors that I got here.

I was born with no complications as far as anyone knew with an older sister who was 2 years older.

When I was 4 years old, my mam died & obviously, I was far too young to understand but as I got older, I became aware that she died from a heart attack.

My sister & i were both monitored at The Freeman Hospital in Newcastle yearly & didn’t have any significant problems except a heart murmur.

When my sister was 12, she died at an end of term Christmas party. There was no warning, no pain – nothing. A teacher who was present performed CPR within seconds, but she was gone. My Dad later found out that she had suffered a cardiac arrest due to a dilated cardiomyopathy.

I was monitored very closely after that but even though I had regular ECGs & ECHOs nothing was picked up.

When I was 15, I started fainting & felt the occasional ‘flutter’ in my chest, but doctors dismissed it as me just growing up & that it was normal for young girls to pass out.

My cardiologist retired & everything stated pretty stable.
