Pakistan has achieved a major medical milestone with its first successful corneal transplant from a female donor, restoring sight to two soldiers injured in counter-terrorism operations.

The Armed Forces Institute of Ophthalmology (AFIO) performed the surgeries using corneas donated by the late wife of Major General (Retd) Zafar Mehdi Askari, in accordance with her will.

Surgeons successfully restored the vision of 30-year-old Aliullah and 26-year-old Falak Sher.

The donor’s daughter, Zehra Mehdi, said her mother’s contribution was “a source of eternal charity (sadaqah-e-jariyah).”

Medical experts hailed the procedure as a historic step for Pakistan’s healthcare system, underscoring the need to promote organ donation. Despite the achievement, officials warn that organ shortages remain critical, with 10–15 Pakistanis dying daily due to unavailability.

Specialists have urged reforms to encourage donations and explore xenotransplantation to address the growing organ failure crisis.
