Over 5 years ago gorgeous Cole passed away at 8 months old, just 3 weeks after receiving a heart transplant.

Cole’s mammy and daddy, Lauren and Rich, found out at their 20 weeks scan that Cole had a serious and very rare heart defect – called hypoplastic left heart syndrome.

Cole was born on 5th July 2019 at 11.20pm at Newcastle RVI but he was transferred straight to the Freeman Hospital in the early hours of the morning.

At 3 days old he underwent his first 8-hour operation followed by a further 2 heart surgeries a few days later due to complications that meant his aorta in his heart was too narrow to repair. This led to him getting a stent and it allowed his aorta to open up to allow the blood through.

Cole was eventually listed for his transplant in January 2020 due to being far too poorly and many complications led him to not be eligible for his second major palliative surgery called the Glenn.

Cole had many problems that prevented him moving forward such as a narrow pulmonary artery, leaking valves, breathing issues and their main worry at the time was the protein losing enteropothy. This is a condition where the body leaks albumin (a protein found in blood) and cannot absorb it properly during feeds. They thought this was caused due to Cole’s poor heart function and circulation. We later found out during his inquest that Cole was the youngest ever baby in the UK to have the PLE condition as this is normally seen in post fontan patients and no child as young as Cole has ever been recorded.
