On this New Year’s Day we share Jean’s story about all her boys; her husband Michael who has had a liver and kidney transplant, and how one of their sons shared their spare kidney with his brother.
“My husband Michael has polycystic kidney disease which has also been inherited by two of our 3 children.
In 1996 at the age of 42 his kidneys failed, and he was put on dialysis.
The next 2 years were very difficult, having a young family, and trying to keep things as normal as possible for them, whilst fitting in 3 sessions of dialysis a week, 4 hours at a time.
In January 1998 he got the phone call that changed all our lives, a kidney had been found for him. We experienced lots of mixed feelings, such as hope for the future, but also our thoughts were with, and continue to be, with the donor and her family. Thank you can never seem enough words to say.
Michael was fit and well for many years after his transplant, and our lives returned to normal. Michael was able to do the things with his children that he had been unable to do before.
However in 2012 he unfortunately picked up an e-coli bug, and was in hospital for 9 weeks where he was told he needed a liver transplant.
He had cysts in his liver because of the PKD but the bug had exacerbated his condition. He was very ill, and his transplanted kidney also began to fail.
