A woman in Barcelona, identified only as Carme, has received the world’s first face transplant from a donor who chose medical aid in dy!ng.

Carme’s face was severely d@maged after a bug b!te led to a flesh-3ating inf3ction (necrosis) and s3psis, leaving her unable to properly speak, see, or eat. As her condition w0rs3ned, she was given a second chance at life through a groundbreaking surgery at Vall d’Hebron Hospital.

In a historic decision, the donor had chosen before her d3@th to donate her organs — including her face. Carme later shared that the donor “gave me a part of her life so that I could live.”

The complex operation involved 100 medical professionals, lasted many hours, and required advanced microsurgery to reconnect nerves. Carme spent one month in the hospital and now says she’s finally beginning to recognize herself in the mirror again.

To date, only 54 facial transplants have ever been performed worldwide — making this case truly one of a kind.
