Louise shares her story to heart transplant during this our Heart Month and how she was activated on the transplant list one day, and the next day was told that a heart had been found.

“Born in 1970 with transposition of the arteries I underwent surgery in 1971, called the mustard procedure, at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Gave birth to our daughter in 1999 ‘& carried on with a good life. I also started working for the NHS and life was good.

In 2015 I kept going into AF and subsequently was admitted to the Freeman for cardiac ablation. I was in theatre for 9 hours.

For a year after I was ok then I went back into AF I underwent cardioversion 3 times on separate occasions.

I actually had a transplant assessment in 2016 at the Freeman but was too deemed too well at that time to go onto the transplant list.

I was then admitted to the Golden Jubilee Hospital & had a defib inserted.

All good, and was discharged.

However following this procedure I passed out and woke up on bathroom floor so in 2022 I had appointment at the Golden Jubilee for a right heart catheterisation!

Got the right heart catheterisation done and I knew things weren’t good, as the team were all in a huddle discussing me.

I got admitted that day for complete bed rest as my kidneys weren’t good.

Just short of 2 weeks in the Jubilee I was transferred to the Freeman in Summer 2022, the next day being activated on the transplant list and the next day was told that a heart had been found which was a match for me. The following day I went into surgery in the early hours.

I am now 3 years post transplant and am forever grateful to my donor & their family as they have given me my life back.”
