I’ve been pretty quiet on here, mostly because I’m fairly sure I haven’t seen daylight in weeks. I’m deep into a four-week physio placement in respiratory critical care, the most rewarding, fascinating, challenging, and emotionally exhausting part of student life so far.
It’s a strange thing to spend your days surrounded by stories that echo your own: DKA, transplant journeys, organ donation, lung cancer, end-of-life conversations. It’s brought up memories of some of my favourite people, and everything my own body has survived. I’ve been inside more than outside lately, but honestly… it’s all worth it.
Because every time I help someone breathe a little easier, move a little more, or bring even a moment of comfort to a family, I’m reminded exactly why I chose this path. Not everyone I see will make it back to who they were. but if I can make the smallest difference to them, their family, or someone they may go on to save, that feels like a kind of success.
Sometimes I question whether re-training in my late 30s is worth it. Every single second of this placement is confirming it 100% is,even at 1:30am shadowing an on-call, which is when this photo was taken.
I just need to trust the process.
