“If you’re from the Asian or black community, you’re twice as likely to need a transplant, because of conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes, but half as likely to say yes to deceased organ donation.”

Those are the words of Mahmud Nawaz, whose wife helped to save four lives – including that of an 18-month-old baby – when she donated her kidneys and liver after suddenly passing away.

Mahmud, an organ donation ambassador and Chair of Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, spoke more about his wife’s selfless act – and the life-saving impact of organ donation – during a powerful interview with Arzu Dutta that was broadcast last night on BBC radio stations across Yorkshire, Humberside and Lincolnshire.

Mahmud also used the interview as a chance to raise awareness of the 2026 Westfield Health British Transplant Games taking place in Sheffield in August.

The Games aims to encourage people, from all backgrounds, to have a conversation with their loved ones about consenting to organ donation. It can save up to nine lives – and change 50 more.
