I had the honour to participate in a submission and speak on “Ethical, Legislative, and Regulatory Aspects of Kidney Transplantation” during the KRACON conference hosted by Kenya Renal Association in association with The International Society of Nephrology (ISN) , @IPNA and @ISPD
In Kenya, the law currently allows organ donation only between individuals related by blood or legally married as spouses. While this regulation ensures ethical safeguards, it also limits access to kidney transplantation for many patients who struggle to find a matching donor within that setup.
Across the country, many patients on dialysis struggle to find donors, often waiting for years while battling both physical and emotional exhaustion. One of the proposals that we’ve been pushing for, a deceased donor program has already been recommended by the Committee on Tissue and Organ Transplant Services, but it is not yet fully operational in Kenya.
If effectively implemented, such a program could make transplants more accessible and help thousands lead better-quality lives.
However, the recent investigations involving Mediheal Hospital, where serious allegations of unethical transplant practices and possible organ trafficking have been under government review, remind us why strong legislation, transparency, and oversight are crucial. These cases highlight the delicate balance between expanding access and upholding integrity in organ donation and transplantation.
Kidney transplantation in Kenya and across Africa still faces many challenges: limited access and inadequate infrastructure, high costs and limited insurance coverage, shortage of donor organs, insufficient collaboration, and low public awareness.
Yet, there is great potential for growth if we invest in healthcare infrastructure, strengthen ethical frameworks, and build trust through education and accountability.
I’m deeply grateful to be part of this year’s KRACON, contributing to conversations that shape policy, raise awareness, and bring hope to patients and caregivers across our nation.
