How far have we come in HIV organ donation and what does it mean for people living with HIV today?

Today’s post in my HIV: From Fear to Facts series explores the history and science behind HIV-positive organ donation in the UK, and why evidence, awareness, and equality matter.

For decades, people living with HIV were excluded from donating organs due to outdated fears and limited knowledge. It wasn’t until 2016 that the first HIV-positive organs from deceased donors were successfully transplanted into HIV-positive recipients, under strict medical and legal guidance. Once again we must thanks The National AIDS Trust for their amazing advocacy here!

In this piece, I share how the process works from assessing donors’ viral control to identifying suitable recipients and ensuring informed consent highlighting the careful oversight required to make these life-saving transplants possible.

Registering as an organ donor is easy and can save lives. It provides clear guidance to families and ensures your wishes are respected. You can sign up using the link in my #bio

Understanding and sharing these facts is essential to normalise donation, challenge stereotypes, and ensure that people living with HIV are recognised as fully capable contributors to healthcare and society.
