„Dive into life!“

I received this advice at the hospital after my heart transplant.

Thailand was my first long-distance trip after my heart transplant.

Southeast Asia has always been my favorite travel destination. I loved it.

What would it be like now; how would my body react to the different climate, the different food, the different conditions?

As soon as I stepped off the plane, that old feeling was back, that feeling of being so comfortable, like floating on air, of being exactly where I belonged, wonderful.

After a good two weeks in Thailand, I can say it was great that I took the plunge. I felt very comfortable and enjoyed it immensely.

Leaving my comfort zone (with the usual medical care) was definitely worth it.

Gaining new impressions through landscapes, regions, people, and their ways of life—that’s what life is for me.

Would I do it again? Absolutely! This is my way of enjoying life and feeling that it was the right decision to take the long and difficult path of organ transplantation.

But it was a bittersweet experience.

A wonderful stay in Thailand, followed by a return journey that no one would wish on anyone. Being stranded in a war zone from one hour to the next. The uncertainty, not knowing what would happen next, whether the life-saving medication would last, whether one would even make it home… All of this was incredibly stressful.

But then, once you’ve overcome all of that and are back home, you can consider yourself very fortunate to live in such a safe and peaceful environment!

This is an experience that travel can teach you. Not everyone is lucky enough to be born into a life like ours. It’s something to always remember when things aren’t going so well.
