Did you know that there are currently 8,000 people in the UK waiting for an organ transplant? In the last year, 400 people died because they didn’t get the organ they needed.

I learned all this and more over a beautiful day Yr Wyddfa as part of Organ Donation Week. On a stunningly sunny September day, I joined NHS staff and relatives of people whose lives have been saved by organ donation for their annual organ donation awareness hike. Hearing their stories was really moving, especially the parents with young children. It was the wind making my eyes run, honest!

Even though we have deemed consent in the UK, if you want to be a donor it’s really important you record your wishes on the NHS Organ Donor Register. You can choose to donate some or all your organs and tissue, and you can amend or withdraw a registration at any time.

If there is no recorded decision for you, in the UK your consent may be deemed. But it makes it much easier for the Specialist Organ Donation nurses to talk to relatives about the subject of organ donation in the event of your death, if your wishes have been recorded.

Each year, hundreds of opportunities for transplants are missed because families aren’t sure what to do. Your family will always be consulted about whether you wanted to be an organ donor or not, and clinicians will never proceed with organ donation if your family or loved ones object.

Just Google organ donation register and you’ll find out how to do it. It’s easy and only takes 2 minutes.

Massive thank you to all the wonderful staff in the North Wales Organ Donation team. You are all incredible. And to the families who have lost loved ones and enabled others to go on living through organ donation – the biggest thank you of all ❤️
