Clare’s daughter Talia was born with biliary atresia in 2019. Thanks to her daddy sharing part of his liver in April 2021 with his baby girl, Talia is now a wild toddler according to her mummy. Clare shares their story:

“In August 2019, I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, Talia; both my partner, Philip, and I were over the moon.

Unfortunately 3 weeks later we discovered that Talia was born with an extremely rare congenital liver disorder, biliary atresia. Biliary atresia progressively destroys the bile ducts and the liver. There is no cure for this disorder and a liver transplant is required.

Talia was admitted to the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children and transferred to Birmingham, under the care of the specialist liver team. At a few weeks old she underwent major liver surgery in an attempt to slow the progression of liver destruction. This operation, ultimately, was not successful and Talia was put on the liver transplant list in March 2020.

Talia although sick and NG fed and on a list of medications as long as your arm, she never let it get her down, always smiling, unless it was weekly blood appointments, but even then as soon as the procedure was over she was back to smiling and playing. I always joked that I couldn’t have coped with a sick, plus unsettled child, as Talia really is the most content baby you will meet.
