Brooke shares her son Brody’s story during this our Heart Month and how one day Brody may need a heart transplant:
“Brody, my little one-year-old from Belfast, was born with a complex heart condition known as hypoplastic left heart syndrome. This condition means that his left ventricle didn’t develop properly in utero, leading to a series of other serious heart issues, including:
– Transposition of the great arteries
– Double inlet double outlet ventricle
– Severe pulmonary and subpulmonary stenosis
What does this mean for Brody?
His journey has led us down a very hard path both emotionally and physically; the single ventricle pathway, which involves a three-stage series of surgeries designed to prolong his life.
Without these interventions, Brody wouldn’t have a chance to survive. So far, he has bravely undergone two surgeries, with the crucial Fontan procedure scheduled in the next year or so.
This journey is not just about surgeries; it involves countless hospital appointments, emergency trips, and hospital stays in the wonderful Clarke Ward that have totalled around five months. Each day is a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of hope.
But how does this relate to organ donation?
The surgeries Brody has received are palliative—they help extend his life, but they do not guarantee a future. Should the Fontan procedure fail, we face the heartbreaking reality of needing to place Brody on the heart transplant list. Unfortunately, this list is notoriously long, and finding a suitable donor is incredibly rare.
This isn’t Brody’s whole story! He is kind , courageous and the most comical little boy you could ever meet! His heart might only be half but boy does he make up for it in every other way
We hope that by hearing our story we can spread some awareness of organ donation and get families to be more open about chatting on the subject… it’s an incredible and indescribable gift and one that truly changes lives.”
