“At age 17, my daughter, Karsyn, was diagnosed with a rare cancer in the connective tissue of her liver called Sclerosing Epithelioid Fibrosarcoma. This cancer doesn’t typically respond to chemotherapy or radiation, and with the mass being as large as it was, it compromised her portal vein, which supplies blood to her liver. We were told her only option was a liver transplant.
On February 15, 2022, she was listed for a transplant. Just two days later, on February 17, we received the call, notifying us of a possible organ match. Karsyn was admitted that night, and by February 19, she had received her transplant.
Through one selfless, life-giving decision, my little girl was given a second chance at life — more memories, more love, and more time with us. While we have not been in contact with the donor family, Karsyn and our family will forever be grateful. We will live not just for herself but in honor of the life that made hers possible.
Our family has been touched by organ donation in many ways. In 2009, my sister-in-law was a donor, a childhood friend is a living kidney donor, and another friend is a two-time cornea transplant recipient. Through all of these connections, Karsyn, and I, along with many of our family members, are now registered organ, eye, and tissue donors.
We are forever thankful for the gift of life that organ donors give to families like ours.”
