As I reflect on the photos from last September, celebrating our Matriarch’s 90th Birthday at the @durbanicc, I am overwhelmed with gratitude. Today, 10 February, marks exactly 12 years since my kidney transplant, a milestone I might never have reached without the woman standing in these pictures.
When my parents passed away in 2005, she didn’t hesitate. She stepped in, filling the void and shaping me into the man I am today. But her love went beyond just raising me; she walked through the valley of the shadow of death with me. It was through her dedication and fidelity to God that I learned to seek Him for myself. She showed me what it looks like to “take up your cross daily” (Luke 9:23). Because of her witness, I tasted and saw that the Lord is good (Psalms 34:8) and found my own home in the @adventistchurch.
Her favourite verse, John 3:16, planted a seed in my heart that sustained me through seizures, TB meningitis, and the dark days of illness.
That faith carried me to 10 February 2014. After years of fluid restrictions (500ml a day!), missed opportunities, and health battles, God provided a miracle through my sister, @lihlengz. Despite the setbacks, the delays, and the disappointments, God’s timing was perfect. I remember the peace I felt the day before the surgery, a confirmation that God was with us.
Twelve years later, I look back at the journey:
– From dialysis to qualifying as a CA(SA) with @saicaza
– From being unable to work to running my own company @nombelaconsulting
– From surviving COVID-19 to being able to travel the world 🌍
– From founding the @one_k_foundation with @lihlengz to helping others fighting this battle 🧡
To my sister: Thank you for the gift of life. To my Grandmother: Thank you for showing me the Giver of Life.
My prayer is that God keeps her so we may share many more experiences until Christ’s Second Coming. To anyone facing a health battle today: keep the faith. With God, anything is possible!
