11 years ago the inspirational Sarah who is part of our group, received her heart transplant.
Today she shares her story of when her life was changed thanks to a precious donor and their courageous family, and how she is now trying to help others as they wait for transplants.
“I was born in 1986 with a congenital heart condition called Transposition of the Great Arteries, TGA. I lived a relatively normal life until I was 15 and then required medication to help me along.
Medication kept me going. After the birth of my son Jake, it was obvious that the pregnancy had taken its toll on my heart. I knew this could happen but was so desperate for a family.
Life was very hard as I was now in heart failure at 27. My then 7 year old son had to be cared for by his nan, my mum’s life therefore completely changed.
I underwent an assessment to see if I was suitable for a heart transplant – over 5 days of tests. Sadly, they discovered things were now worse than they expected so on my birthday, October 16th, I became active on the transplant list.
Life was so difficult now. I couldn’t walk the stairs to my bed. My Jake hardly saw me as all I did was sleep. I waited 3 months at home.
My heart team really wanted me to wait on the urgent list in hospital but I was desperate to have Christmas at home but 2 days after Christmas I had no choice as I was now gravely ill.
I was made comfortable in my room in the coronary care unit and continued waiting.
Amazingly 8 days after being admitted I was lucky enough to be told by the Drs they had a heart and it was a match!
